About the Artist

ARTIST STATEMENT
Through my artwork, I seek to capture the contradicting energy and serenity of an unpredictable natural internal psychological landscape as well as in the outer world of global events. I create mixed-media collages, combining painting, drawing, and photography to present a "Requiem of Solace Series”
This series seeks to capture acts or tokens of remembrance, tribute and reflection for the loss of home, youth and even life for all those who have suffered loss. The images here seek to provide a kind of indemnity or ode to the resilience evoked by these losses. Compensation comes from within the sufferer through the resurrection of recognizing loss and grief, reflection of the memories and a tribute to survival despite loss. Loss of home is reflected in the banners. Loss of youth is reflected in the “Kimono Series” presenting realization of the compensation of acquired wisdom obtained through the aging process. Home can be seen as a state of mind and the action in the mixed Media pieces moves in and out of the home and its entire placement. "Displaced Home" could be a psychological state similar to disassociation from self. Home becomes a symbol of the relationship of self. Displacement can be a feeling of not belonging, even when physically present in a space. The idea that someone can experience displacement without being physically displaced resonates deeply with the experiences of many individuals who have faced exclusion, marginalization, or discrimination. It could be due to their identity, beliefs, culture, or simply being different.
The shower curtain in this exhibit is a concept that resonates perfectly with the idea that memories of home are fragile, ephemeral, and susceptible to change. The fact that a shower curtain is often associated with privacy, intimacy, and daily routines adds another layer of depth to the artwork. Displaying the shower curtain in a refugee's foreign bathroom setting would provide a powerful commentary on the displacement experience. The absurdity, nostalgia, and grief are all apparent through this juxtaposition. I created this art piece with mixed media and repurposed my original drawing by adding additional layers of memories in 2024, I have continued this series of works into 2025 called “Banners of Requiem.” The loss of home and family addressed in some of the works reveals the lessons learned by watching the turmoil suffered by so many in the United States now with the inception of ICE upon people whose origin of birth is placed in question by the governmental “authorities” of the USA. Learning empathy and solace to those under threat by these actions brings a new determination and vision of the necessity of all humanity to overcome these challenges together.
As I began working with the kimono images, I found my emerging textures, paintings, and drawings served as narratives of the challenges and wisdom found through the process of aging. These kimonos emulate the balance and poise of the structure of the Kimono and reflect an acceptance of the changes that emerge as one gains years and wisdom through the aging process. Textures and colors with unsmooth surfaces emerge, forming images of caverns reflecting an inner change and growing insight. The images resemble an outer space context and present a growth in Cosmic Awareness through the trials, challenges, and fortitude discovered in the aging process.
Expressing the aging process and its effects on our awareness includes a balance of loss- loss of youth, loss of innocence and effortless ease with the acquisition of awareness gained through life experiences through challenges, hardships and loss. Experiencing loss, while painful, can encourage new growth and insight. Looking at the losses of those around us can sensitize us to the zenith of awareness through empathy and clarity. Additionally “Kimonos of Requiem” provide a kind of intent of indemnification for loss of youth through recognizing the wisdom obtained through the trials and tribulations of life.
As I began working with these kimono images, I found my emerging textures, paintings, and drawings served as narratives of the challenges and wisdom found through the process of aging. I have been working as a professional artist for over 40 years and during that time I have exhibited throughout the world in Seoul, South Korea, Bangladesh, The United Arab Emirates, Germany, Italy, France, Finland, Switzerland, Peru, the United States and even on the Moon. I currently live and work in Louisville, Kentucky, USA.
